Produsen asal Francis itu menargetkan bahwa di tahun 2024 mendatang, Michelin akan memasarkan ban tanpa udara, atau Unique Puncture-proop Tire System’ (Uptis).
Nah, korban pertama yang akan merasakan itu adalah mereka yang berprofesi sebagai penambal ban.
Bahkan untuk menjual produknya itu, Michelin menggandeng produsen otomotif General Motor. Pokoknya di tahun 2025 mendatang, General Motor akan menjual produk terbarunya ke publik.
Selain Michelin, ada produsen lain yang juga mengembangkan produk yang sama, yakni Brigestone. Produsen ini sedang mengembangkan produk serupa, QuietTrack.
Ban tanpa udara ini memiliki struktur unik pada dinding, yakni, berfungsi sebagai penyangga di antara bagian ban pada tapak pelek.
Struktur semacam itu dapat dipahami karena
fungsi ban tidak menggunakan tekanan udara. Bahkan fungsi semacam ini diproduksi untuk meredam guncangan dan membantu suspensi meredam daya kejut dan hentakan, ketika ban menjeblos ke lubang atau melintasi jalan yang tak rata.
Untuk menghadirkan ban tanpa udara tersebut, Michelin telah membesut dan mengembangkannya selama 16 tahun.
Menurut Michelin, tak ada cara untuk mengetahui ban tanpa udara ini bisa bertahan. Namun pengemudi harus rajin memeriksa ban untuk mengetahui keadaannya selama difungsikan. Setidaknya, kata Michelin, ban tanpa udara itu diprediksi bisa difungsikan selama lima tahun. “Setidaknya ban tanpa udara itu bisa bertahan hingga tiga kali lebih lama dibanding ban konvensional,” ujar Michelin.
Michelin berharap agar landasan ban bisa bertahan dua hingga tiga kali dibanding ban konvensional.
Dalam kaitan itu, para pengemudi bisa mengganti karet tapak di lingkaran luar ban jika kondisi ban sudah aus.
Dalam mengemudikan kendaraannya, kata Michelin, para pengemudi tak perlu membawa ban serep selama dalam perjalanannya.
Dikutif dari CNN bahwa pihak pabrikan mengklaim bahwa ban seperti ini juga ramah lingkungan. Sebab material yang digunakan dapat didaur ulang.
Ban tersebut bisa dijual dengan harga mahal. Michelin mengatakan bahwa tiap ban harganya mencapai US$40 hingga US$65 atau berkisar Rp 622 ribu sampai Rp 1 juta perban (kurs Rp 15.568).
Sedangkan Bridgestone Quitetrack menetapkan harga lebih mahal, yakni setiap ban dihargai US$133 atau berkisar Rp 2 juta rupiah. Waw mahalnya ?
